Australian Scholarships: Build an Eligibility Checklist

Find the awards that fit before writing the application

A clear checklist helps you separate eligible opportunities from attractive headlines and prepare the right evidence.

Identify what kind of funding you are looking at

“Scholarship” can describe very different support. A tuition contribution, a living allowance and a research funding package do not solve the same problem. Before comparing amounts, identify what the award pays for and which type of student it supports.

Study Australia distinguishes government, provider and other funding sources. Its guidance identifies the Research Training Program as support for research master's and doctoral study, so it should not be assumed to fund an ordinary coursework master's.

Keep the official link and date checked beside each award. Ask the scholarship office about an unclear condition before investing hours in a statement.

Prepare evidence that answers the selection question

For academic merit, organise results and the grading scale. For leadership, describe what you personally did, who benefited and how the outcome can be supported. For community service, distinguish sustained involvement from a single event. Submit only the evidence the application requests, in the required format.

The University of Sydney's Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships Scheme illustrates automatic consideration: eligible applicants need an unconditional offer by the relevant deadline. UNSW's International Scientia Coursework Scholarship requires an application and considers more than grades, including leadership and extracurricular activity. The evidence strategy should follow the award's rules.

Translate the headline value into your budget

Read the payment period before calculating savings. “Per annum”, “first year” and “minimum duration” mean different things. A tuition-only award does not automatically cover accommodation, travel or health cover. Confirm whether it is paid to you or credited against fees.

  • Coverage

    Which expenses are funded?

  • Duration

How long does the support last?

  • Conditions

What must you maintain or complete?

Compare the remaining cost after confirmed support. A larger award at a more expensive programme does not necessarily create the lower net study cost.

Prioritise applications you can support well

Sort your list into eligible and ready, eligible but incomplete, unclear, and ineligible. Work first on awards where your evidence fits the criteria and the deadline is realistic. Do not let a scholarship application cause you to miss the admission step that makes you eligible in the first place.

Use Achieva Study Explorer to connect your scholarship research to a viable course list. Save the official award conditions alongside each option, rather than treating the presence of a scholarship as proof that you qualify.

Track the process after submission

Record the submitted version, confirmation number and expected next step. Monitor requests for missing documents. If successful, check the acceptance deadline and any continuing conditions before adding the funding to your budget.

If unsuccessful, revisit the course's undiscounted cost and other confirmed support. A strong application is still useful evidence of your achievements, but a future award should remain an uncertain scenario until you have a written outcome.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Does “automatic consideration” mean an automatic scholarship?

No. It means eligible applicants can be assessed without a separate scholarship application. Competitive selection may still apply.

Can I apply before receiving an offer?

It depends on the award. Record exactly what offer status is required and when it must be achieved.

Can I hold two scholarships at once?

Only if their conditions allow it. Check both awards for restrictions before combining the amounts in your budget.

Does full tuition funding mean every expense is covered?

No. Check living expenses, travel, health cover and other costs separately. “Full tuition” describes tuition coverage, not an all-expenses-paid package.
