Group of Eight: How to Compare Beyond Rankings
Turn reputation into questions that matter to your degree
Go8 membership can help frame your research. The next step is comparing the course you will actually study.

Understand what the label tells you
The Group of Eight is a group of research-intensive Australian universities. It is a useful way to identify institutions with substantial research activity, but it does not tell you which degree fits your background, what your timetable looks like or how much your full study plan will cost.
Treat reputation as the beginning of a comparison. If you are interested in research, investigate relevant researchers and project access. If your goal is professional practice, investigate curriculum, practical assessment and any required recognition. Both approaches are more specific than assuming a university-wide ranking answers a course-level question.
Put the same questions to every institution
| Compare | Look for | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Curriculum | Compulsory units and available electives | Similar titles mean identical degrees |
| Practical learning | Project brief, placement rules and assessment | An industry partner logo guarantees an internship |
| Teaching experience | Study-area evidence and academic support | Research reputation describes every classroom |
| Research access | Supervision process and selection criteria | Every coursework student can join any laboratory |
| Personal fit | Entry rules, campus and total cost | The most famous option is affordable or suitable |
Keep the comparison at the same degree level and subject area. Comparing one university's undergraduate experience with another's research programme will not answer your actual decision.
Follow your interests into the course handbook
Choose three skills you want to develop and find the units that teach them. Then check whether those units are compulsory, elective, restricted or dependent on prerequisites. A specialisation name on a marketing page is not enough to show that all the subjects you want fit into your degree.
For projects, ask who defines the problem, what you will submit and whether you work independently or in a team. For placements, ask how selection works and whether students must find their own host. Write “needs confirmation” whenever the information is missing instead of giving the programme credit for an unverified opportunity.

Compare the life around the degree
Your experience includes the journey to campus, your housing arrangement and the hours available for study. Build a realistic weekly routine for each serious option. An attractive course can become difficult to manage if the commute is much longer than expected or your accommodation budget leaves little room for essentials.

Compare confirmed scholarship offers separately, rather than using the largest advertised award as an automatic discount.
Test the funding assumptions
Ask whether you would still choose the programme without a scholarship. If the answer is no, record the exact funding outcome that would make it viable and keep a financially workable alternative. This makes the effect of a competitive award explicit.
Use Achieva Study Explorer to organise the universities you want to investigate, then apply the same course-level questions to Go8 and non-Go8 options. A consistent comparison makes it easier to identify a strong fit outside the first group of names you considered.

Use outcomes as evidence, not a promise
ComparED provides student experience and graduate outcome comparisons, with results at institution and study-area levels. Check the cohort, qualification level, survey period and sample information before interpreting a result. The platform explains that overlapping confidence intervals can make small differences unreliable.
Add a short interpretation beside each figure: what does it tell you, and what does it leave unanswered? Historical outcomes cannot predict your individual job offer. Your final choice should combine relevant evidence with the curriculum, practical opportunities and financial plan that work for you.

Questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
Are Go8 universities always the best choice?
They may be strong options, but suitability depends on your course, entry position, professional goals and budget. Compare relevant options outside the group as well.
Should I use overall or subject rankings?
Subject rankings may be closer to your field, but neither replaces examining the actual programme. Always record the ranking publisher and year if you use a ranking.
Does Go8 membership guarantee an internship?
No. Read the specific course and placement rules, including selection, availability and who arranges the host organisation.
Why does the list say Adelaide University?
That is the institution listed on the Go8's current member page at the time of checking. Use current institution names when preparing applications.
