Field Guide
There is no official Australian definition of an “affordable course”.
On Study Explorer, affordability should be treated as a comparison between current tuition costs for similar study options, rather than a claim that a particular course is universally “cheap”.
A lower annual tuition fee does not automatically mean a lower total study cost.
Always compare both:
A two-year program with a lower annual fee can still cost more overall than a shorter course.
Your study budget can also include:
Study Australia specifically notes that education costs vary according to the provider, study level and location, and that actual living costs can be higher than the minimum amount used for visa purposes.
A higher-fee course with a substantial scholarship can sometimes cost less than a course with a lower advertised tuition fee.
Compare the net tuition cost after confirmed scholarship support, rather than relying only on the headline fee.
Tuition is only one part of affordability. Accommodation, transport and day-to-day costs vary significantly between Australian cities and regions.
Regional study should therefore not automatically be labelled “cheaper”; compare the actual course and location together.
Some VET, TAFE or pathway programs may have lower tuition than higher education courses and may provide credit towards later university study.
However, academic credit is course-specific and should be confirmed before enrolment. Study Australia notes that relevant VET pathways may provide university credit and can sometimes reduce overall study costs.

Expert Context
Students often begin by searching for the cheapest course in Australia, but tuition alone is not enough to make a sensible comparison.
A more useful calculation is:
tuition + duration + living costs + compulsory costs − confirmed scholarship support
You should then compare that figure against course quality, curriculum, progression options and your own academic goals.
Comparing a one-year diploma with a three-year bachelor degree purely by annual tuition is misleading.
Courses should first be grouped by:
qualification level → subject → duration → location
and only then compared by price.
Australian university and college fees can change between academic years. Course availability and intake dates can also change.
For Study Explorer, fee information should therefore display a source year or last-checked date wherever possible rather than being presented as permanently fixed.
Price is influenced by provider type, subject, facilities, location and course structure.
A lower tuition fee does not by itself indicate that a course is academically weaker, just as a higher tuition fee does not automatically indicate that it is a better fit.
Questions, answered
It means courses with comparatively lower published tuition costs among relevant study options. It does not mean that one course will be affordable for every student.
Always check the fee label. Annual tuition and estimated total tuition are different measures and should not be compared interchangeably.
Yes. Providers may update tuition fees, particularly for future academic years. Check the latest official provider information before accepting an offer.
Some are. Scholarship eligibility is determined by the institution and individual scholarship conditions, not simply by the tuition price of the course.
No. Some regional locations may offer lower living costs, but this is not universal. Tuition, accommodation and transport should be compared separately.
Start with your study level and subject, then compare tuition, course duration, scholarship eligibility, city, entry requirements and total estimated cost.
Compare tuition, course duration, scholarships and study locations instead of choosing a course from price alone.
