Field Guide
This is the most important distinction on this page.
Australian nursing master's programs can include the two types below. These should not be compared as equivalent programs.
Designed for students who already hold a non-nursing Bachelor Degree and want to prepare for initial Registered Nurse registration.
Designed for people who are already nurses and want advanced study in leadership, specialist practice, research, education or another nursing area.
Australia has approved graduate-entry master's programs leading toward Registered Nurse registration.
The current Ahpra approved-program data includes qualifications such as Master of Nursing Practice (Graduate Entry) and other approved master's-level general nursing programs.
Graduate-entry nursing programs include substantial clinical learning.
Students may need to satisfy:
Initial nurse registration requires applicants to meet the NMBA English Language Skills registration standard.
The revised standard has applied since 18 March 2025.
If your goal is initial registration as a Registered Nurse, check the exact program in the current NMBA/Ahpra approved-program register.
A postgraduate nursing course designed for registered nurses does not automatically qualify a student for initial RN registration.

Expert Context
Are you already a Registered Nurse?
If the answer is no, and you want to become one, you need to investigate approved entry-to-practice programs.
If the answer is yes, a postgraduate nursing degree may instead be designed to develop specialist or advanced professional capability.
“Master of Nursing”, “Master of Nursing Practice” and similar titles can describe programs with very different outcomes.
Always verify:
admission background → approved-program status → registration outcome
A university may admit you according to its own English requirements.
Professional registration is separately governed by the NMBA standard.
Internationally qualified Registered Nurses may have access to a registration assessment process rather than needing to complete an Australian entry-to-practice master's degree.
A revised general registration standard for eligible internationally qualified RNs came into effect on 23 April 2025.
This means students should not assume that “Master of Nursing” is automatically the correct pathway if they already hold overseas nursing registration.
Questions, answered
Some approved graduate-entry master's programs can provide the education pathway toward initial RN registration.
No. Many are designed for nurses who are already registered.
Check the entry requirements and whether the exact program is listed as an approved program of study for general nurse registration.
No. Graduates still need to apply and meet all applicable NMBA registration standards.
Entry-to-practice programs include clinical education. Post-registration programs may have different practical requirements.
Not necessarily.
Compare whether the course is entry-to-practice or post-registration before looking at fees, duration and university ranking.
