Course overview
Gain a solid foundation in physics and mathematics, and acquire extensive knowledge in the area. You will learn to understand physics at a deeper level, apply scientific principles in a physics context, and understand the role of physics in society. This degree is accredited by the Australian Institute of Physics. The Bachelor of Science (Physics) aims to provide students with an extended foundation in physics and mathematics, it also aims to develop a range of transferable research, analytical and communication skills including the capacity to understand physics at a deeper level and understand and apply relevant scientific principles in a physics context. In particular this involves development of an intuitive knowledge of physics principles and having a maths ability that serves as a language for physics and for applications of physics. The degree appreciates the nature of experiment design and execution, and to understand the principles of operation of scientific instruments commonly used in physics. Students will be able to retrieve and present information about physics in a scientific manner, including communicating effectively with a variety of audiences in written and spoken form and structure problems in physics, develop computational skills to model and analyse problems, be able to use critical thinking. A Nuclear Engineering major is also offered in this course. Nuclear engineering at Flinders University is offered through a tri-nation academic partnership between Flinders University (Australia), the University of Rhode Island (United States) and Manchester University (United Kingdom). An exchange option is available in the United States through a placement opportunity. Nuclear engineering topics are undertaken in intensive mode over 8 days in summer (January) and winter (July) from Year 2. To be eligible to study this major you must be an Australian citizen. On completion of the degree students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of and critically apply the theories, subject content, professional methodologies and research procedures relevant to the discipline of physics and analyse and critically evaluate ideas/information/data and apply relevant scientific principles to solve problems. Students will be able to appreciate that there are relationships and connections between physics and other science and non-science disciplines and understand such relationships and connections in respect physics and demonstrate an intuitive level of understanding of the physical processes and being able to identify and self-correct misunderstandings. This degree prepares graduates for employment in various workplaces including private and public global organisations. Potential occupations may include physicist, defence scientist researcher; potential employers may include telecommunications, photonics organisations and instrumentation developers. On completion of this degree there is an opportunity to apply for a one-year Honours degree. For further information visit http://www.flinders.edu.au/honours .
